Writing effective plugin prompts

State the operation, source of truth, constraints, and desired output clearly. For connected service plugins, specify what should be a draft versus what can be sent immediately.

Example — SQL Grounding:

*"Use SQL Grounding to inspect the attached schema. Explain the relationship between orders and refunds, then draft a read-only query for monthly refund rate. Do not modify data."*

Example — Deep Research:

*"Use Deep Research to find the latest academic papers on transformer efficiency improvements published in 2024. Summarize the top five findings with citations."*

Example — Terminal Executor:

*"Use Terminal Executor to run the test suite in the attached repo. Report which tests fail and suggest fixes."*

Troubleshooting plugins

Attach the required file or provide the URL, identifier, date range, or output format the plugin needs. Check the plugin detail page for required inputs.

Reconnect the OAuth provider from the plugin settings, or reduce your request to a permitted read or draft operation.

Convert the source file to a supported type (PDF, CSV, TXT, standard code formats) and retry.

Narrow the scope, split the job into smaller steps, or ask for an intermediate result. Long research tasks may benefit from using Deep Research's structured output mode.

Keep the run in the conversation thread, describe the mismatch, and ask for a corrected pass. The audit log helps you identify where the output diverged.
